About our board

We have one mission: Help Children Battling Cancer. These children and their families need our help. Candlelighters of Western Washington funds basic needs for families living with a pediatric cancer diagnoses. 

And that pediatric diagnosis often means: 

·  A parent needs to take leave from work or stop working to be with child in need of care.

·  Treatment and care are often not predictable in terms of timing and the child's response - this means more time away from work and experiencing the heavy emotional weight of being worried that your child might die.

·  Siblings need to be cared for and likely have very specialized needs as well.

Candlelighters Funds Basic Needs for Cancer Families

This can include emergency financial assistance for groceries, gas, transportation and utilities. It also includes bereavement services, such as helping to offset funeral expenses for children tragically lost to cancer. And every year over the Holidays Candlelighters provides a very popular adopt-a-family program helping dozens of families have a little more joy during the season of giving.

How we select pediatric cancer families to help

Candlelighters of Western Washington verifies each family’s need based on input from hospital social workers. Each family we serve completes an application for assistance. Families must meet need-based and income qualifications established by Candlelighters in partnership with Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital and Seattle Children’s. An annual giving maximum is established by the Candlelighters Board of Directors to ensure equitable distribution of funds to those in need.
